The soil structural property reflects soil physical state. It depends on creating conditionas well as surrounding environment, and always influences the soil mechanical properties.Loess, a typical structural soil, which has special structure, is very easy to collapse. As a kindof water-sensitive soil, loess always shows vulnerability under dynamic loading. Loess iswidely distributed in china. Engineering disease and geotechnical engineering problems aremore prominent in these loess areas. Therefore, it is of great importance to focus on loessstructure and its relationship with collapsibility and dynamic settlement. Based on theprevious research results on loess structure, this paper proposes loess structural potentialparameter with single variable. The law for loess structure and structural potential parameterunder different mechanical conditions is surveyed by lateral confined test and dynamictorsional shear test. Furthermore, the relation of loess structural potential parameter andmoistening deformation coefficient, and dynamic settlement is built. This undoubtedlyexpands the application domain for this structural quantitative parameter. The main works inthis paper are as follows:Based on the previous research on loess structure, the building mechanism of loessstructural potential parameter is analyzed, and the loess structure potential parameter withsingle variable is suggested. In static loading condition, the loess structural deformationpotential parameter can be described with secant modulus, this means stress can be thefunction for the parameter. In addition, in cyclic loading condition, loess structural dynamicstrength potential parameter can be described with dynamic shear modulus, this means thedynamic shear strain can be the function for the parameter.Through strain analogy, the loess structure dynamic deformation parameter is suggested.And the parameter can be reduction as single variable parameter described by dynamic shearstress. Then, the relationship between loess structure dynamic strength potential parameterand structure dynamic deformation potential parameter is analyzed. The law of intact loess structural deformation potential parameter is researched byconfined compressed tests with Yangling and Luochuan loess. The influence of water contentsand pressure on the parameter is revealed. Further, the water content effect on secant modulusis analyzed. Based on those, the relationship model between loess structural deformationpotential parameter and water content is built in this paper.The loess moistening deformation coefficient can be described with secant modulus.Further, associated with loess structural deformation potential parameter, the relationshipmodel between loess moistening deformation coefficient and structural deformation potentialparameter is constructed. The model reveals the influence of loess structural deformationpotential parameter on moistening deformation coefficient. And the influence of water contentand pressure on these is analyzed.The change of intact loess structural dynamic deformation potential parameter andstructural dynamic strength potential parameter is researched under dynamic shear tests withYangling loess. The influence of confining pressure, water contents, dynamic shear strain, anddynamic shear stress on those two parameters are revealed. The influence law of watercontent on dynamic shear modulus under the same dynamic shear strain condition is obtained.Based on those, the paper builds the relationship model between loess structural dynamicstrength potential parameter and water content.The influence of shake frequency, water contents, confining pressure and dynamic shearstress on loess dynamic settlement characters are revealed by dynamic shear test. Based onthis, the relationship between dynamic settlement coefficient and dynamic shear stress issuggested in this paper. This relationship can be associated with loess structural dynamicdeformation potential parameter. Furterh, the relationship between dynamic settlementcoefficient and loess structural dynamic deformation potential parameter is constructed. Themodel reveals the influence of loess structural dynamic deformation potential parameter ondynamic settlement coefficient. At last, water content and pressure effects are analyzed aswell.
