Due to the fact that there is a wide and large distribution of residents in rural areas of China, there is a lack of regular supervision and management from planning and site selection to engineering and construction.Through a lot of research on seismic capability and actual seismic damages, the seismic capability of rural residence is relatively weaker compared with urban residence. The degree of seismic capability of rural residence depends on the economic capability of the farmers themselves, the awareness of earthquake mitigation, traditional seismic methods and the attention of government. The seismic capability has presented a feature of a strong capability in east region and a weak capability in west region. Exactly speaking, there is a stronger capability in more developed regions and a weaker capability in less developed regions. For example, most western regions and eastern earthquake risk zones would always suffer from medium earthquakes.Rural residence, especially old residence, doesn’t even have basic seismic solutions. Besides, construction materials have been aging and gotten rotten severely. In the current situation, the evaluation and research of seismic capability of rural residence is a very urgent job. Although the seismic fortification intensity in Tianjin has been increased since the implementation of the fifth generation seismic ground motion parameter zonation map of China,Tianjin is located inside eastern earthquake risk zones where has a large distribution of rural residents and most rural residence could not even resist a M6 earthquake which is a basic seismic target of Tianjin by 2020.Besides, it is found that not enough has been done on the study on seismic capability of rural residence. Thus, in order to provide technical support and scientific evidence to seismic fortification, site selection and planning of rural residence, to provide basic information for salvation jobs, to facilitate the loss evaluation and fast response of earthquake emergency,it is necessary to conduct an analysis on seismic capability and a study on vulnerability distribution of rural residence in Tianjin.On the basis of the evaluation, research of seismic capability of domestic and overseas rural residence and analysis of seismic safety engineering, this paper first gives an analysis on typical seismic residence across the whole country and its vulnerability and also it gives a classification standard on residence damage grade and a definition of seismic vulnerability index. Second, regarding rural residence in three different typical counties as its research objects, it haspresented a three-grade investigation method of seismic capability, has conducted an investigation and an analysis on the seismic capability of rural residence in Tianjin,has finished some force tests on construction materials and components and finally it gives a duo-index classification method and standard of mechanical property of construction materials and components and wall damage grade. On the basis of the investigation and testsmentioned above, this paper first gives an analysis on earthquake vulnerability and gives a comparison analysis on the vulnerability of both rural residence in Tianjin and across the whole country. Second, it gives an analysis on the distribution of seismic capability in Tianjin and also a definition of seismic capability and index of seismic capability. Then, it gives an analysis on the characteristics of the distribution of seismic capability for rural residence in Tianjin through population, damage ratio,structure type and proportion factors. Finally, this paper gives its outlook and conclusion.Specifically speaking, this paper has conducted the following jobs:First, this paper gives an analysis on current research and background of seismic capability of both domestic and overseas rural residence, gives an analysis on its seismic characteristics, damage features and damage mechanism, gives an analysis on earthquake vulnerability of rural residence across the whole country, gives an analysis on the vulnerability comparison among different types of construct structure and gives a definition of index of vulnerability.Second, it has conducted an investigation on seismic capability for Tianjin rural residence, has presented a current seismic situation for three different typical rural residence, has finished an investigation form for typical single rural residence and formed a structure chart, has finished an investigation form of overall seismic capability for rural residence and has provided basic information to facilitate the evaluation of seismic capability for Tianjin’s rural residence including an analysis on its vulnerability. Meanwhile, it has finished some force tests on construction materials and components which includesa compression test on standard test blocks made from mortar, slag mortar and cement mortar, tests on axial compressive strength of three types of masonry and static tests on twelve wall components which has confirmed compressive strength and shear strength of typical rural residence in Tianjin and has come to a duo-index classification method and standard for wall damage grade.Then, on the basis of a great number of investigations on typical rural residence,it has conducted an evaluation of seismic capability and an analysis on earthquake vulnerability, has given an seismic capability index for sampled single rural residence,a quantity distribution of different types of houses and a vulnerability matrix and has given an analysis on the comparison between rural residence both in Tianjin and across the whole country.Finally, it gives the definition of seismic capability and its distribution index and comes to a classification standard of seismic capability distribution. Besides, on the basis of thequantity distribution of rural residence with different types of structures and its vulnerability matrix, the seismic capability distribution of rural residence in Tianjin is achieved through standard deviation method and by way of calculating the sum of target residence through population density distribution.
