Since the new century, the realism tradition of Chinese film creation has been in thedilemma of development; even it was once "absence" in the movie screen. At the sametime, Chinese film appeared imbalances in the arts and commerce in the process ofindustrialization transformation. It becomes an urgent era proposition to solve how therealistic movie breaks out of encirclement and glows the new vitality in order to promotehealthily sustained development for Chinese film. This is also the motive and purpose ofthe dissertation that "study on film realism since the new century".Film realism has been in a new survival context since the new century. So the studyon it cannot continue research train of thought whether the film needs realism or not, butresearch focus should be shifted to "how the film realizes realism ". Therefore, thisdissertation adopts research methods that combine theory discussion with close reading,i.e. based on realism theory, centered on movie text, combining theoretical research andcreative practice; striving to search for a feasible way to the sustainable development ofChinese film realism.Revisit to the realism is based on the special living circumstances of the newcentury Chinese film. It involves three aspects as follow, the cultural context,globalization structure of the film as well as industry environment of the movie. After thenew century, mass culture gradually achieved a dominant position. The social aestheticneeds are turned away from the rational cognition to the perceptual entertainment and theofficial position and elite position are also turned to the mass position, which makesaesthetic orientation of Chinese film realism challenged. The western film ideas have animpact on the ideas of Chinese film realism in the process of formatting film pattern ofglobalization. Market value of the film realism is being questioned because of thetransformation of film system.Film realism is multiply challenged in the new survival context, which bringsconfusion in theory and impetus in theoretical exploration and construction.Realismhas openness and diversity, which is not only a kind of spiritual character, but also a kindof creation method. Film realism has the same assumption as artistic creation; the "authenticity" of film realism is a kind of multi-dimensional real, which includespresentational truth, a sense of reality and logical truth. Humanization shaping ofcharacters is not a deviation from typical theory, but the realization from anotherdimension. Exploring in these issues is critical for breakthroughs and development ofChinese film realism in the new century.The development of digital technology has the important influence on the creationof film realism and even causes rewriting it to some extent. While film realism can useadvanced technology to show its own artistic charm better only by adapting to this kindof change and development.It does not indicate the entire disappearance of film realism that film realism in thenew century is defeated and "absence" in the market. In fact, as a kind of deep-rootedartistic tradition, realism has still been existed in Chinese movie creation. Film realism inChinese films in the new century mainly has three kinds of performance form as follow,classic realism style created by the Theme Movies, modernity transformation of realismcreated by documentary films, realism of entertainment in the commercial movies.Chinese film realism itself has had certain problems and errors since the newcentury, which is also the important reason for its being in the development dilemma. Thecreation of Chinese film realism has a close relation to state ideology, which limits thecreation of film realism to some extent and damages the credibility of realism movies,such as the problems to false plot. But fundamentally, the limit of film creators is rootedby their ideological misreading. The creation of film realism in new century appearedsome bias in the process of transformation of modernity, such as regarding the "bottomnarrative" as the only subject choice, ignoring the performance of social factors in theconstruction of individualized narrative, which makes the realism movie superficiality.Since the new century, the documentary doctrine has had an important influence on thecreation of film realism. But simplistic understanding of reality theory makes Chinesefilm realism creation produce the problem that it blindly refuses something dramatic andappears conformism of documentary methods. All of them cut down ornamental value ofthe movies.Finally the dissertation puts forward some suggestions on the development ofChinese film realism in the new century. We can neither lose the tradition of Chinese film realism, nor stick to stale ideas. What we should do is to conform to the trend of thetimes and the development and changes of the film itself, to adjust and improve timely, todeepen the realism spirit and strengthen the contemporaneity of film realism, to face thecontradiction and rebuild social vision and insight, as well as to see through the truth ofreal life. Only in this way can we achieve the depth and thickness of realism.
