Tiantai zongis one of the earliest established subclasses of Chinese Buddhism. Gradually, it becomes a rigorous academic framework combining with the Mahayana Buddhist theory originated from India, and summarizes Dharma in the Perfect Doctrine. The Repentance belongs to the same framework. It has long been popular of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, just before Zhiyi. Zhiyi studies under Huisi, and he integrates repentance into the basic practice of Buddhism to establish the Repentance which is based in the Meditation and also merged with matters and theories of traditional Chinese Buddhism. Furthermore, it abandons the form of praying earthly benefits which usually appears in the Repentance of Chinese Buddhism.Zhiyi dedicates his whole life to compile four repentances, " Fa-hua-san-mei ch’an-i", "Fang-deng-san-mei-xing-fa", "Qing-guan-yin-ch’an-fa", and "Jin-guang-ming-ch’an-fa". They are unified under his four types of Samadhi, each with characteristic features. The Repentance, which is redesigned by Zhiyi, presents a whole new look and has a profound impact on future generations. The Repentance Dharma combines Instrument and Introspection and unifies the three non-outflow studies of Buddhism. Eventually, it forms a comprehensive multi-level system of repentance, with Meditation as the leading role and multivariate subsidy in support.
