This dissertation investigates the genesis of Lu Xun’s inner spirit from the perspective of humanistic and discourse phenomenology. Spirit is not a ready-made thing; Lu Xun’s inner spirit does not exist in his works like a pen in a box. It manifests itself in the polyphonic dialogue and mutual comparison of various perspectives, which break their own rigidities. The research of Lu Xun’s inner spirit in this dissertation is open-ended. It presents various facets and different levels of Lu Xun’s inner spirit. The first chapter explores Lu Xun’s childhood experience, which is directly relevant to his self-awakening and his conversion to Mothers of Being. The second chapter analyzes Ito Toramaru’s Eschatology on Lu Xun and investigates Lu Xun’s conscience of the spirit under the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophy. Chinese traditional Xin-Xue thought and Buddhist culture. The third chapter identifies Takeuchi Yoshi’s theory of Conversion and presents different ways of Conversion. By scrutinizing Lu Xun’s prose poetry collection Wild grass, the fourth chapter analyzes the paradox consciousness of Lu Xun and his his transcendent ideas on life and death. What this dissertation has presented is just an image of Lu Xun’s mentality, not the Lu Xun-in-hiself The mental image, formed from the research subject’s probing into Lu Xun’s works with problem consciousness and feeling of times, presents a visage of Modernism.
