“Kommunikation” is the cornerstone of Marx’s thought. As a synchronic material,it reflects the ways of structure and organization of man and society in different discourses. Influenced by the circumstances of his living time, Marx used this idea to investigate early capitalist society, to criticize the social relations of capitalism and to formulate his ideal of the communist society. This is key to understand Marx’s theory of communication. However due to influences of thetextbooks from former Soviet Union,Chinese scholars are used to think that Marx has no communication theory. Previous scholarship mainly value the two basic concepts of "economic factor" and "class analysis" in understanding Marx interpretation of the social history,, research on communication as the third basic concept are comparatively scare. This study examines Marx’s communication theory. Combining text analysis and context analysis, it explores the ideological formation and evolution of the Marx’s communication theory, and reveals the essence and values of Marx’s idea that “society is the product of the activities and results of personal contacts,is the social relations between people under certain historical conditions “. Thus this thesis tries to remove the dense fog set by politics, economy, media and technology, and goes back to the core issue——man. This thesis focuses on two questions:One is the historical formation and evolution process of Marx’s communication theory; the other is the influence of Marx’s communication theory on the discipline of communication, arguing that the theory is the fundamental thinking of the communication discipline. The thesis consists of eight chapters. The first chapter is the historical review about communication forms and the early philosophy of exchanges; The second chapter is the early exploratory stage from philosophy to sociology; The third chapter is about the social relations of " man in reality”;The forth chapter is about the unequal social interaction based on the capital logic; The fifth is examination with the "big view of history " vision on communication’s role as the internal mechanism of social development; the sixth chapter explores how Western Marxism inherited Marx’s communication ideas; The seventh chapter is discussion about the essence and intrinsic quality of Marx’s theory of communication. The eighth chapter is re-evaluation of the communication theoryin Marx’s thought system, as well as the changes in the new context of themedia. From the double dimensions of the historical events and ideological texts, the thesis achieves from the micro‐text analysis to the macro‐thinking, from social appearance to the deep perspective, from the description of the facts to the elucidation of the significance.Based on a historical perspective and historical facts, the thesis draws three conclusions: First, Marx’s communication is not simple inheritance of Western philosophy, but carries the complex historical process of multiple factors, such as ideal and reality; fact and value; secondly, communication ideas occupy an important position in Marx’s thought,so we can more thoroughly grasp and understand the whole picture of Marx’s thought. thirdly, Marx’s communication theory is about the thinking of the person’s social activities in social existence and social history. Communication should has a " broader " perspective, because communication change the society and is meanwhile more deeply rooted in society. Marx’s communication theory allows the discipline of communication becoming increasingly mature and rich.
