Modernization is both a basic trend and a special stage in the development of human society. The pursuit of modernization runs through China’s social development since recent times. The construction of socialist modernization and comprehensive deepening of reform essentially are the extension and innovation of China’s modernizing process in the mid-19th century. The practice of modernizing needs the instruction of modernization theories. The modernizing practice of ideological and political education breeds its modernization theories and these theories promote its practice in return. Therefore, theoretical studies of the modernizing practice of ideological and political education are the precondition and foundation for further promoting its modernizing practice. The real practice of constructing socialist modernization has continued for half a century under the leadership of Chinese Communist Party. Though mistakes like "Overriding Political" used to happen to ideological and political education, it contributes more as a "lifeline". However, systematical analysis of its basic modernization theories, to a certain extent, lags behind its modernizing practice. Therefore, a meso-level theoretical abstraction and preliminary exploration of its modernizing practice are doubtlessly necessary and urgent. Moreover, the research on its modernization is closely related with the historical development of Chinese Communist Party. This paper, with a view to the mission of constructing socialist modernization, taking the realistic situation of modern social development and the problems in front of ideological and political education as an entry point, from the perspective of how ideological and political education transforms, explores its modernizing process. This paper mainly elucidates the specific contents of modernization of ideological and political education by first studying the concept of modernization of ideological and political education, second theoretically analyzing its practice, third discussing its practical motivation, and last analyzing its main path. First, this paper studies the concept of modernization of ideological and political education. Current researches of modernization of ideological and political education are generally superficial. One big reason is the confusion of its concept categories and the linear research perspective. Since modernization itself is already a big group of concepts including several sub-concepts with similar meanings, through defining the different senses and relations between modernization and modernity, social transformation and transformational society, ideological and political education of modernity and modernization of ideological and political education, traditional ideological and political education and modern ideological and political education, scientization of ideological and political education and modernization of ideological and political education etc., this paper proposes that modernization of ideological and political education refers to the practical process of its modern transformation.Second, this paper theoretically analyzes the modernization of ideological and political education. This paper, from three aspects of its historical background, its research horizon and its structural transformation, respectively sets basic orientations for its research. First, it explores the socialist field for its theoretical analysis, taking the historical development of socialist modernization as its main background; second, through framing its traditional and modern theoretical structures, sticking to the its essential stand, based on the socialist practice with Chinese characteristics, and enhancing its modern identity, specifies its basic requirements; last, by analyzing the relations between ideological and political education and ideology, ideological and political educator and educate, and analyzing the structural transformation of its educator system factors, this paper will discuss its structure’s modernizing transformation.Third, the practical motivation of modernization of ideological and political education will be explored. Exploring the practical motivation of modernization of ideological and political education is to demonstrate two points:the one is that modernization of ideological and political education is not out of nowhere, but has a rather deep practical foundation. This paper will analyze its external motivation from the perspective of Chinese Communist Party transforming from revolutionary political party to ruling party and modern social being’s needs for their development. The other is that modernization of ideological and political education is a self-constructing process, that is, modernization is the result of its own development. This paper will take some stage characteristics in its development and its basic conflicts as an entry point and find out the internal motivation for its modernization. In addition, by synchronically observing the changes of motivation, it can be seen that the motivation has gone through a process from single to composite.Fourth, this paper will discuss the main path of modernization of ideological and political education. The content system of modernization of ideological and political education is very large. So far microscopically, analyses of modernization of many elements in ideological and political education like its educator, its content, its goal, its method and its carrier have been done very much. Thus this paper attempts to explore the efficient realization of its modernization from other three aspects: reinforcing its leading consciousness and pushing forward the modernization of socialism’s mainstream ideology; widening its activity field and promoting the modernization of thinking mode; improving its time effect and propelling its practical functions.
