“The Supplement of Chenbao”—one of the four big supplements during the Early Republic of China, is one of the main positions for the early transmission of Marxism in China as well as an important position for the transmission of different schools of socialist ideology in China. It has an important academic value and practical and theoretical meaning for a better understanding of the early transmission of Marxism in China to clear the basic status of the transmission of Marxism and different schools of socialist ideology. However, critics in this field have largely ignored this aspect up until now. Thus, in order to truly reflect the initial status of the transmission of Marxism in China, based on the research achievement of many critics and reviewers, the essay attempts to clear and investigate parts of the representative texts regarding to Marxism and Socialism in “The Supplement of Chenbao” from 1918 to 1926; inspect the personnel system and the ideological and theoretical resource during the early transmission of Marxism in China and how different political groups use these ideological and theoretical resources to debate dealing with important problems like the practical relationship with Russia. This essay will first illustrate the personnel connections of “The Supplement of Chenbao”. During the illustration, it is clear to see the key role of Li Dazhao in the personnel system of the transmission of Marxism through “The Supplement of Chenbao” during the May 4th Movement of 1919 and the following New Culture Movement since most of the authors of the articles talking about Marxism on it in that period have close relationship with Li Dazhao. These authors become interested in the study of Communism during meetings and conferences; follow closely with Marxism together due to the schoolmate relationship and transmit Marxism in China in an organized and systematical way with the help of institutes. The essay will further analyze some of the typical texts issued on “The Supplement of Chenbao” and preliminarily figure out parts of the ideological and theoretical resources that the Marxism authors used when transmitting Marxism. From the perspective of the European society and history of the International Communism Movement, Abe Isoo?s works are the model for other writers. Most of their understandings of historical materialism come from the illuminations of the contemporary Japanese scholars. The interpretation of Capital by Japanese scholars like Kawakami Hajime is indispensable for the interpretation of the political and economic philosophy of Marxism. Even the understanding of the proletariat leaders like Karl Marx and Friedrich Von Engles owes much to the influence of those Japanese scholars. Yet it is not the only influencing factor. Works of the European and American theorists and scholars such as Karl Kautsky, George Douglas Howard Cole and R.C.K Ensor are also important ideological and theoretical resources. The debate upon uniting or hating Russia on “The Supplement of Chenbao” continues from October, 1925 to the beginning of 1926. Different from other studies, this essay includes this debate into the research of the early transmission of Marxism in China and gives it a distinctive historical investigation. Through the systematical investigation, it is easy to figure out the opinions expressed by different political groups which take part in the debate upon uniting or hating Russia. With the deepening of the debate, the liberalists and researchers are gradually inclined to nationalism holding that communism is not fit for China and China should not unit with Russia since the Soviet Union is an imperialist country. But then the Communist Party of China and the Left Wing of Kuomintang insist that China should unit with the Soviet Union and regard communism as China?s future in order to fight against the invasion of imperialist countries.
