The diversity of higher education in world cities effectively guarantees the high-qualitydevelopment of higher education. The development history of higher education in world cities, such as New York, London and Tokyo jointly verified the process. With the construction anddevelopment of these world cities, comes the corresponding evolution of higher education in ahigh-level and high-quality pattern. The diverse and plural development of higher education hasbeen incessantly satisfying the demand for diversity and pluralism, and as a result, endoweditself with the ability to provide high-quality talents for world cities. The dissertation chose the diversity and pluralism of higher education in world cities asresearch focus, and studied the diversity, the interaction between diversity and city developmentof world cites, such as New York, London and Tokyo on the basis of theories of educationsystem, dissipative structure, synergetics and open complex giant system. It also tried tointroduce the dynamics and periodicity of convergence and divergence of higher education, thecoordination and evolution of self-organization, the formation mechanism of dissipative structure, and the formation and evolution mechanism of the higher education diversity. It aimed to providetheoretical frame and development strategy for higher education diversity to transfer Beijing intoa world city with Chinese characteristics. The study results of the dissertation revealed that the development of higher educationdiversity in different cities shares the features of gradual convergence and long-term divergence. The diversity, together with its evolution of higher education in world cities affords somebeneficial inspiration for studying diversity of higher education and the mutual progress of worldcities, as well as the relationship among different colleges and universities in higher educationsystem. On the other hand, the development of higher education has an inseparable genericconnection with historic and social environment of that particular city. Different developmentbackgrounds of world cities make various diversity index of higher education. Even some similarissues will take on diverse forms in different backgrounds. Thus, the diversity of highereducation in Beijing cannot simply imitate the experience of New York, London and Tokyo. What it needs most is to localize the foreign knowledge and experience on the basis of athorough research and deep understanding of the local situation.
