| During the period between1950’s to1970’s, the discourse of the People’s Daily constructed an American stereotype, which reflected the CPC’s attitudes towards the U.S. and other Western countries as well as its political ideology. The ideology conveyed in the Daily’s American stereotype was indoctrinated into the minds of the Chinese people and therefore enormously affected their political behaviours in turn, hence the significance of the CPC organ’s propaganda. This dissertation explores the contents, the methods, the impacts and the mechanism of the Daily’s propaganda amidst its construction of the American stereotype.Chapter1introduces the status of the People’s Daily as the organ of the CPC, unveils the Party’s political ideology and presents the background against which the Daily’s propaganda was conducted between1950’s to1970’s. Chapter2centers on the diplomatic image shaped by the Daily’s discourse. In the process of this image shaping, the U.S.’Germany and Japan policy was rendered into U.S. fostering militarism of both the ex-fascist countries. Besides, the U.S.’ anti-colonialism was misinterpreted by the Daily. Chapter3discusses American domestic politics narrated in the Daily’s discourse, i.e. the election and party system, the American constitution, the Civil Rights Movement and the persecution of the C.P.U.S.A. Such narrations are imbued with the CPC’s political ideology. Chapter4reveals how the Daily surveyed the U.S. economy and its social welfare. This survey reflects the CPC’s economic orientation then, which exerted a far-reaching impact over the Chinese economy and social development.
