For 3 years study following Master Zhou Dean, the author made a comprehensive conclusion of Master Zhou's academic theory and its development. And clinical research of the effect of this theory was conducted with Zhou's supervision.1 The development of Master Zhou's academic theoryThe theory of Master Zhou was developed from the Chinese classic, the academic inheritance of the late masters in acupuncture department of Beijing TCM Hospital and his clinical experience.2 The academic theory of Master ZhouBased on his clinical practice, the distinguished theory of Master Zhou includes:1. The six treating theory:treating of Shen?treating phlegm?treating pain?treating wind symptom? treating hyperactivity?treating deafness, and treating Shen is the important point in clinical treatment.2.The addressing on harmony of Qi and Blood; 3.The practice of combining acupuncture and Chinese medication; 4.The editing of acupuncture and moxibustion formula; and 5.The application of moxibustion treatment.2.1 The Six Treating Theory2.1.1 Treating of ShenAccording to Master Zhou, the disorder of Shen is a common cause of illness. That makes Shen an important point in clinical treatment. In the clinic, Zhou uses acupuncture and medication to mediate Shen based on the theory of "Treating Shen in advance of disease treatment". The goal is to achieve the equilibrium of yin-yang and individual balance. To treat mental disorders, Master Zhou point out brain and heart should be treated together, he creates "Si Shen" formula as basics, "Wu Zhang Shu and Ge Shu" formula for tonic nerves, "Thirteen Points on Du Meridian" formula for mind-tranquilizing therapy and "Four Guan Points" formula for liver soothing. Those are used to treat kinds of mental disorder symptoms such as mental disease, emotional disease.2.1.2 Treating phlegmMaster Zhou assumed that the principle of treating phlegm related diseases is to manage Qi and the function of the spleen as well as eliminate the phlegm. Acupuncture treatment has shown a unique effect on management of Qi and Blood and treating the disease from its cause. Hence, Zhou invents many formulas for phlegm disease treatment such as "Hua Tan formula", "Di Tan formula", "Huo Tan formula" and "Xiao Tan formula". Meanwhile, Master Zhou use medicines treating phlegm in managing Qi and blood and strengthening the spleen and reducing phlegm. The combination of acupuncture and moibustion is proved to be effective for epilepsy, dizziness, globus hysteriocus, obesity, asthma and cancer. As "Hua Tan" formula, six cuns'gold needle has been completed copy by advocating of Master Zhou.2.1.3 Treating painZhou in the treatment of pain syndrome was first needling at Baihu?Baihui?Zanzhu, then needling "tiao qi zhi tong fang", based on the channels collaterals with internal organs for needling in the end. The treatment reflects the "two principles" of Zhou:1.Adjust Qi after Shen. Zhou believed that adjustment Shen can make the heart silence and pain reduction, at the same time, the blood tends to be flat. And then use a variety of ways to adjust the Qi flow, finally treating the pain. The tiao qi zhi tong fang consisting of three luo points (lie que, feng long, zhi gou) is made for the treatment of a variety of pain symptoms.2. Distinguish the pain is in the channels or organs. Early pain in channels, normal disease location in twelve skins and twelve channels, treatment based on channels. The long time pain, disease location in organs, pain was slow, treatment based on organs. Six treatments include:quieting spirit and stabilizing mind, empathy to reduce pain, promoting Qi and activating blood, Tong Du Wen Yang, Pei Yuan Fu Zheng, and clearing heat and fire.2.1.4 Treating wind symptomThere are two kinds of wind evil-the internal wind and the external wind. The treating of facial paralysis caused by external wind and of stroke and parkinsonism by internal wind is Master Zhou's advantages. For the treatment of facial paralysis, Zhou addresses the diagnosis of different patterns, location and course. In acute stage, acupuncture treatment should be gentle with fewer points and good qualities. Decoction is consisted of Baijiezi, Baifuzi, Baijiangcan, Baizhi, Gegen, Banlangen, Wugong, Quanxie. The main formula is preventing Feng with dialectical treatment. In sequelae stage, acupuncture treatment should standard use fine fire needle with smoothing. For stroke treatment, doctors are suggested to differentiate the location of the evil-at the meridian level or the organ level. For those with meridian attack in the pattern qi deficiency and blood stasis, wind and phlegm bloke channel or yin deficiency and yang excess, Zhou would choice the acupoint formula named si hen fang with twelve points on the extremities as well as the bu zhong yi qi fang and the qu tan fang, with medications named bu yang huan wu tang, ban xia bai zhu tian ma tang and zhen gan xi feng tang. For organ level attack in the pattern of yang bi, yin bi or tuo syndrome, the kai qiao xing shen points (ren zhong, nei guan, yong quan, feng long and twelve jing points) and hui yang gu tuo fang (bai hui, shen liao, shen qui, guan yuan, zu san li) would be appied with salted moxibustion on shen que, qi hai and guan yuan point. Master Zhou is good at using Zhen Wu Tang for treating parkinsonism. He believes that reasons of parkinsonism are kidney essence attenuation, hepatorenal Yin deficient, Jing and blood deficient. If Yin symptom seriously, sitting on the Du meridian by moxibustion in order to warm yang to promote diuresis and support meridian channel.2.1.5 Treating hyperactivityThe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the Tourette syndrome are called as "Dong Zheng" (hyperactivity syndrome) by Master Zhou. It is closely related to the dysfunction of the five organs, especially to the heart, liver and spleen. For solid syndromes, there is liver wind agitation and phlegm-fire confusing heart syndrome. For deficiency syndromes, there is insufficiency of heart/liver and spleen and tendon and vessel malnutrition syndrome. According to the treatment, the basic principal is tranquilization. Four Guan points are the foundation in acupuncture treatment, while different points will be added according to different syndrome. The ban xia bai zhu tian ma tang and wen dan tang are used for solid syndrome and the xiao yao san and the gui pi tang are used for deficiency syndrome.2.1.6 Treating deafnessWith nearly of 50 years clinical practice, the modern medicine shows little effect on neural deafness, treatment by Master Zhou has shown some improvement with an effective rate around 30%. He divides the disease into solid and deficiency pattern. Solid pattern shows Qi-stagnation and blood stasis and deficiency pattern shows kidney essence deficiency or yin deficiency and yang excess. The points are including Baihui, Shenting, Jiaosun, Ermen to Tinghui, Yifeng and Zhubin are used for solid syndrome, while points including Zhongwan, Guanyuan, Shousanli, Zusanli and Taixi for the deficiency one. And the formula named Cong Er Fang is effective as the medication treatment method. Zhou would prefer adding Jiegeng, Xingren, Yujinxiang and Chenpi for reflecting academic theory of'"treating lung to deafness".2.2 Balance Qi movement Yin and Yang in equilibriumQi is one of the bases of the function of mental and physical activity. Normal movement of qi is important to Yin and Ying in equilibruim. Zhou supposed:1. All diseases were resulted from Qi, the Qi of normal organs is:Lung managing ascending, liver managing rising, kidney yang managing rising, lung governing purification and descending, stomach managing downward, courage managing drop, kidney yin managing fall. Movements abnormal lead to o diseases occur.2.Middle-jiao, liver, courage, spleen, stomach is the core of Qi Yun. Spleen rising stomach falling, liver rising and courage falling is normal. Liver and courage based on rising and falling of spleen and stomach. Worse or better of exogenous pathogens depends on spleen and stomach.3. Zhou choose point depended on the theory of Qi. He managed balance of Qi in middle-jiao achieve ascending and descending functions. He created three acupuncture formulas as " tonifying middle-Jiao and Qi", "regulating Qi and strengthening spleen", "managing Qi and pain-relieving" for the treatment of unbalance of Qi and Blood.2.3 The combination of acupuncture with medicineThe characteristic of Zhou in clinical work is the combination of acupuncture with medicine. He supposed:1. Each one has his good points, combination of acupuncture and medicine can greatly improve the curative effect. It is worth promoting.2. He compared the relationship between the combination of acupuncture and medicine to Chinese medicine compatibility relations in a single file, mutual promotion, mutual-assistance. Needle and medicine can be used together or alone, and the needle medicine is different from primary and secondary.3. He divided into ten types for 28 tacupuncture prescription, including common diseases of acupuncture and moxibustion prescription:bu yi men. zhi feng men, wai gan men, tong bian men, zhi xie men, uropoiesis and reproduction men, managing qi men, qu tan men, quieting spirit men, wu guan men.He widely used in clinical medicine broth of no more than twenty, small and exquisite of drug commonly used to add or subtract. He summarized 28 acupuncture prescription to add and subtractpair-acupoints and single point.3 Effect observation of Master Zhou's treatment of combination of acupuncture and medication on sudden deafness of adult patientsAdopting the nonrandomized controlled research method, we evaluated the effect of Master Zhou Dean's clinical experience combining acupuncture and Chinese medication on sudden deafness. By this study, we proved a clinical effect that a combination of acupuncture and medication, determined the course of more than 14 days of the treatment of refractory patients with sudden deafness. Conclusion of the clinical protocol is beneficial for its further generalization.
