| This dissertation mainly examines the process of Chinese aiding Vietnam to fight against US from 1960 to 1969 especially by Yunnan province. Including Vietnamese archives and Chinese local ones, the dissertation investigated and analyzed the multinational archives and documents, and combined the existing academic research study, explored the aid from the local Chinese provinces to Vietnam for fighting against US, evaluate status and effects of the Yunnan province in the Chinese strategy of assisting Vietnam. Specifically, the key questions discussed in this dissertation are as below:the motivation, policy making and the process of China assisting the Vietnam to fight against US in Indochina; how did Yunnan province become the forefront of the Chinese foreign strategy and the rear area of the Vietnam liberation; Yunnan assisted Vietnam in economic construction, trade cooperation and cultural education; the relationship between Chinese central and local government on assistance affairs; the relationship between Vietnam receiving provinces and institutions with Yunnan province and aid agency etc. The last section of the dissertation makes a summary and a commentary on the characteristics of the Yunnan aiding Vietnam to fight against US.This dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter one analyzes the Chinese assisting Vietnam approach and evolution process from 1950 to 1975 in the cold war context. Chapter two discusses the Chinese foreign aid policy and Vietnam appealing for international aid policy, focusing on the Yunnan province and Chinese local provinces’ aiding Vietnam to fight against US and the understanding of Workers Party of Vietnam towards the foreign aid and trade cooperation. Chapter three describes Yunnan province’s aiding Vietnamese Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Lai Chau provinces to develop agriculture, industry and infrastructure, and the reflection of the Vietnam receiving provinces. Chapter four discusses Yunnan province’s technical and logistical aiding to these three Vietnam provinces, focusing on the process and the result of the China training Vietnamese students and interns. As the conclusion, chapter five evaluates the Chinese central government and Yunnan local government’s aiding Vietnam to fight against US during the cold war. |
