Modern Chinese Quotes Response Format Research

In oral interactive communication, the speakers quote the other party's utterance with the help of certain language means and respond to the other party, express the attitude and cognition to the other party's utterance, which forms quotative responsive construction. This is one kind of peculiar responsive construction, whose nature, characteristic and function is different from the traditional citing and ought to give examination as one kind of independent, systematic object of study. Investigation and discussion in the past focuses on the research of negative quotative responsive phenomenon. This dissertation which uses the relevance theory of interactional linguistics, frame construction and quotation for reference, bases on the support of large-scale Chinese language corpus and takes method of combination of conversational analysis and grammatical analysis, exhaustive description and full explanation, synchronic examination and diachronic exploration, systematic discussion and case analysis, carries out all-round, systematic research and analysis to quotative responsive construction.Besides introduction and conclusion, this dissertation divides into four parts together.The first part of this dissertation is systematic research of quotative responsive construction, which discusses the nature and characteristic, scope and category, structure and function of them on the whole. This part divides into four chapters together. Chapter 1 discusses the nature and characteristic of quotative responsive construction. Firstly, it defines the quotative responsive construction. Then it explores the nature of it. Finally, it discusses the characteristic of quotative responsive construction from the perspective of form, meaning and pragmatics. Chapter 2 discusses the scope and category of quotative responsive construction. Firstly, it defines the scope of responsive depicting and responsive quoting from the difference of depicting and quoting. And then the quotative responsive construction is divided into three categories: positive quotative responsive construction, questioning quotative responsive construction and negative quotative responsive construction. Chapter 3 discusses the structure of quotative responsive construction basing on the theory of frame construction. Firstly, it analyses the structure categories of quotative responsive construction. Then it explores the fixed part of quotative responsive construction as frame construction. Finally, it focuses on the sources, syntactic features and characteristics of variable part of quotative responsive construction. Chapter 4 holds the point that the quotative responsive construction not only expresses the speaker's subjective attitude and evaluation, but also connects the turn in the conversation via quoting utterance. So the pragmatic function of quotative responsive construction is mainly presented by interpersonal function and textual function.The second to fourth parts of this dissertation divide into seven chapters which separately discuss individual cases of quotative responsive construction.The second part of this dissertation discusses positive quotative responsive construction:“X jiu(?)X”and“kebu(??)X”.Chapter 5 defines the common construction in oral expression“X jiu(?)X”as quotative responsive construction basing on the study of previous related research results.It describes and explains the construction“X jiu(?)X”from the perspective of syntax,semantics and pragmatics.Finally,it explores the origin and evolution of the construction“X jiu(?)X”.Chapter 6 discusses the characteristic and function of quotative responsive construction“kebu(??)X”and explores the diachronic development of it.Finally,it explores the origin of the ad.“kebu(??)”.The third part of this dissertation discusses questioning quotative responsive construction:“shenme(??)X1”and“nishishuo(???)X”.Chapter 7 breaks through the previous conclusion and takes the point that“shenme(??)”can not only quote from others expressing negation,can but also quote from others expressing question.And then it points out the difference between quotative responsive construction“shenme(??)X1”which expresses question and quotative responsive construction“shenme(??)X2”which expresses negation.Chapter 8 analyses the quoting means of quotative responsive construction“nishishuo(???)X”and discusses the evolution of it.Finally,it explores the conversational characteristic of quotative responsive construction“nishishuo(???)X”in communication.The fourth part of this dissertation discusses negative quotative responsive construction:“nicai(??)X”,“shenme(??)X2”and“X nigetou(???)”.Chapter9 discusses the constitutive characteristics,the negative semantic characteristic,mood inclination and the function of evaluative stance of negative quotative responsive construction“nicai(??)X”.Chapter 10 analyses the characteristic of syntax and semantics,pragmatics function of the negative quotative responsive construction“shenme(??)X2”and focuses on the discussion of the solidified causation and mechanism of it.Chapter 11 finds that the construction of“X nigetou(???)”“X nimei(??)”“X gegui(??)”and so on which are used commonly in spoken language has the same negative expression function and discusses the negative characteristics and mechanism of quotative responsive construction“X nigetou(???)”etc.Finally,it explores the differences between the construction of“X nigetou(???)”“X nimei(??)”“X gegui(??)”and so on.In the end, it gives a summary by pointing out the main conclusions and innovations of this dissertation. It also points out the shortcomings of the thesis, as well as the need for further research.
