The Study Of The Free Choice Category

Taking the free choice category of modern Chinese as investigation object,the dissertation has integrated the theory of cognitive semantics and cognitive pragmatics to systematically and deeply analyze the free choice category of modern Chinese.It has established the status of the free choice category in modern Chinese universal quantification category,examined its properties different from other Chinese universal quantification expression properties from the perspective of human cognition,explored forms of several category members,semantics and pragmatic functions in social interaction,summed up their distinguishing features and some asymmetries in use,and analyzed the asymmetry from the perspective of interaction.The dissertation is divided into eight chapters.Chapter 1 is the introduction.It has introduced topic background,research status,research methods and the sources of corpus.Chapter 2 has focused on the research of the whole free choice category.It has defined the semantics of free choice and pointed out free choice category is a continuum structure,which is described as: composition of free choice + ? / ?.It has also examined characteristics different from other quantity expression as a second category of a whole amount;it has believed that members of free choice category more focus on individual differences than any other universal quantification expression;it is a kind of the order cognitive model,not reality in pragmatics,and a kind of subjective category.Chapter 3 has focused on the research of"??NP".Based on the investigation to the corpus,it is pointed out that semantics of"??NP"wander between the polarity of righteousness and free choice.Syntactic position and other internal and external context have played the key role and analyzed the complex context of rank reversal.This chapter has also analyzed pragmatic functions of"??NP"from the perspective of dynamic communication,including stating rules,summarizing the habit and rules and other functions,and had the commanding color,and discussed courtesy of compensation in"??NP"in using"face threat"theory.Chapter 4 has researched on expression of free choice by using interrogative pronoun.It has focused on cognitive characteristics,basic function and extends the functionality of two free choices of interrogative pronouns.It has pointed out that the basic semantic of infinite free choice construction of interrogative pronoun is a stress of the full amount and the method of acquiring universal significance is implemented by listing the ends of the polarity.The cognitive domain of this magnitude is of diversity.The main functions of infinite free choice construction is achieving pragmatic negation through counter-expectation,or acting as background information of counter-expectation,realizing double the counter-expectationreinforcement effect.Finite free choice construction of interrogative pronoun is one of the extension of infinite free choice constructions.The formation of finite free choice construction is associated with two image schema: connection scheme and part-overall scheme,and can express a kind persistence of subjective attitude in pragmatics.Chapter 5 has researched on usingcontrastive antonyrnic to express free choice.Firstly it has identified the opposite of the compound adverbs and contrastive antonyrnic structure,which can express free choice semantics.With relatively high falsified degree of the two free choices and the obvious tendency of modal,this chapter has mainly discussed their communicative functions: antisense compound adverbs often express speculations,euphemism assertions,intentions and other modals,andcontrastive antonyrnic is associated with the modal of discontent,dilemma and helplessness;Finally,from metonymy and metaphor of the cognitive perspective,it has explained the realization of semantic interpretation of the two contrastive antonyrnic free choices.Chapter 6 has researched on using unconditional structure to express free choice.Unconditional structure in Chinese is the source of memebers of free choice.Due to diversification as a means of expression and wide communication field,the chapter has investigated politeness problem of unconditional structure.Because of its pragmatic functions and strong language potential negative features,politeness is lower,but still higher than the polar expression.Chapter 7 has focused on the study of complementary and contrast between members of free choice category.It has reconstructed the network diagram of members of free choice category and described its continuum structure,established the typical member �WH+ ?/?+VP�,and discussed the difference and coexistence between members.The differences have mainly existed in composition,subjective level,style,etc.Finally it has stated the asymmetric phenomenon around asymmetry of the unrealistic context and realistic context and asymmetry of using "?" and "?".Chapter 8 is the conclusion.It has summarized the conclusion,innovation and deficiency.
