Widely regarded as a national “Grand Strategy”,democracy promotion has been very important in the U.S.foreign policy.After the cold war ended in 1990 s,America celebrated its victory over socialism based on former Soviet Union model,and becomes more confident in democracy promotion and world hegemony.China has become the main target of the U.S.democracy promotion since the end of the cold war.It has been the ultimate goal of the China policy of the United States to change the social system of now-biggest socialist country in the world and achieve world hegemony through exporting its ideas of democracy and human rights.When exporting democracy,the United States mainly target at the Chinese younger generation,especially the young university students.Research on American democracy promotion to China has both theoretical and practical implications.In terms of theoretical implications,research on U.S.democracy promotion to China could help solve the theoretical confusions in China,enrich the research fields of Ideological and Political Education,and take control of the war on ideology.In practice,such research could help Chinese young university students recognize the true motives of the U.S.democracy promotion,and ensure that China could win the “smokeless” war with the U.S.The paper consists of an introduction,five chapters in the body and a conclusion.Chapter One is the Introduction.This chapter analyzes the theoretical and practical values of this research,and defines some of the key terms used in the dissertation,such as democracy,American democracy,democracy promotion,etc.This chapter also gives an overview of the research on this topic at home and abroad,and points out the shortcomings of the current researches,and the innovations of this dissertation.Chapter Two attempts to give a brief introduction of the theory and practice of the U.S.democracy promotion.The Mayflower Compact included the early democracy ideas,the victory of the War of Independence laid the foundation for democracy,and the making of the Federal Constitution established democracy system on the American continent.The motives of U.S.spreading democracy world vary,including “manifest destiny” and “democratic peace theory”,but the ultimate motive for American democracy export is national interest.There are different modes in American democracy promotion,exemplary,imposing and infiltrating modes,to name just a few.This chapter also gives a brief history of American democracy promotion.Chapter Three focuses specifically on the U.S.democracy promotion to China.Political,economic and cultural reasons could be identified in American democracy promotion to China.There are three distinctive stages of U.S.democracy promotion.The author also analyses the ways through which the U.S.exports democracy to China,and some of the changes that appear since the end of the Cold War.In the Internet era,American government attach much importance to democracy promotion to Chinese youngsters making use of the experiences gained in “color revolution” and “Arabian Spring”.U.S.democracy promotion brings China much harm,and the policy of U.S.democracy promotion encounters problems at present.Chapter Four investigates the democracy values of Chinese university students.First,some basic principles of tacking democracy promotion are proposed.The Unites States has been attaching much importance to win over Chinese university students.Through the questionnaire the author of this paper collects the first-hand materials of democracy values for the 450 university students from 7 universities in the city where the author lives.SPSS is used to input and analyze the data collected in two aspects: first,the percentage of the students for each question and second,after using the Factor Analysis to measure the 35 variables,we get the democracy values of the students from 6 dimensions and build the SEM for democracy values of contemporary Chinese university students.The research findings show that there is still room for improvement in the education of the democracy values for Chinese university students.Chapter five analyses the ideas,principles and contents counteract American democracy promotion.First,we analyze some basic principles of Marxist understanding of democracy,and some basic ideas to counteract American democracy promotion.As the United States is increasing their efforts to promote democracy,we should attach more importance to the safety of ideology in China and firmly believe in the “four confidences” of socialist democracy,and educate the young Chinese people with the history---not only the history of Chinese people struggling for independence and socialism,but also the history of the United States trying to block and isolate China.Secondly,we also research on the principles when faced with American democracy promotion,such as “the combination of theory with practice”,“sticking to Marxism while being tolerant to other theories”,“education and self-education”,“being scientific as well as thought-provoking”,etc.Third,this chapter also analyses the contents of counteracting American democracy promotion,such as “education of Marxist democracy values”,“education of basic theories in democracy”,“education of Chinese democracy”,and “education of the comparison between Chinese and American democracy”,etc.Chapter Six is about the ways and medium of counteracting American democracy promotion.Typical ways to fight against American democracy promotion include “daily ideological and political work”,“social practice”,etc.Besides,this chapter also discusses the medium to fight against American democracy promotion with,pointing out that we should keep China's excellent cultural tradition and strengthening Chinese people's democracy education in communication with other cultures.The last part is conclusion.Worldwide,America's democracy promotion has encountered big problems,American democracy itself is full of weaknesses,and the America's attempt to promote democracy to China would surely fail.But the United States will not change its policy of democracy promotion to China.Both China and the United States should abandon “cold war mentality”,respect each other,build “new big power relationship” to make China-American relationship healthy and open a new chapter for Sino-American relationship.
