Any civilization can find its roots in culture.Culture demonstrates the accumulation of historical progress and embodies the achievements of liberal arts,and it also serves as background and impetus of formulation of foreign policies.With the increasing frequency of intercultural communication,culture has demonstrated its significant position in diplomacy and become an indispensable part of International Relations.As a special community of international relations,international students are the main object of culture exchange and intercultural communication.The 65 years' education of international students in China has gained both successful experiences and inspiring lessons in strategy positioning,guidelines,operation mechanism and practical cases,which deserves our comprehensive survey and research.The dissertation is based upon theories of intercultural communication with an orientation of cultural diplomacy.Employing the 5W mode borrowed from communication studies as its theoretical framework,present research surveys 65-year-history of international students' education in China in terms of three perspectives: Chinese cultural transmission,understanding China.In order to thoroughly explore historical evolution of international students' education in China from 1950 to 2015,every aspect is further classified into the following three historical phases: from 1950 to 1966,from 1973 to 1995,and from 1996 to 2015.The exploration further makes macro and micro analysis of communicator,media and content of communication and the reception with a combination of temporal and spatial consideration.This dissertation consists of an introduction and a main body.The introduction is about the research origin and significance of the study,history of China's international students' education,a brief review of the domestic research status in quo,research reviews,theoretical framework and research methodology.The main body of the dissertation is divided into five chapters.The first chapter mainly analyzes theories on cultural diplomacy,the relationship between intercultural communication theories and "5W mode" of communication studies,and expounds the theoretical basis of international students in China,its academic value and practical significance.The second chapter mainly discusses the control of communication content by aim of the communicator,decisive role of government policy in instruction of international students,key factors in intercultural communication effect.The third chapter analyzes the main role of higher education institutions in the context of social structure as “organization” media to pass on scientific knowledge and Chinese civilization from enclosed management to opening to outside world in systems.The fourth chapter mainly introduces and analyzes the diversity of international students from their home states to cultural background and their adaption to Chinese culture,the national cultural strategy,perfection of international education system and the achievements made.The fifth chapter proposes not only possible implications of the research on international students' education for intercultural communication,but also dissemination perspectives from educator-oriented to student-oriented,strategy and standard,necessity of establishing assessment system to promote the quality of education of international students.The significance of the strategy on education of international students should be understood by the whole societyEducation of international students in China serves as the important task of cultural diplomacy and cross-culture communication in the form of “culture dissemination” with “value identification” as its core.The theoretical and practical significance of this dissertation consists in the introduction of Chinese civilization to the world to achieve communication and value identification of different civilizations.
