Polarization is one of the important nature of light wave.And polarization holography is a newly developed course which focus on the recording and reconstruction of polarization information.In contrast to the conventional holography in which amplitude and phase information are recorded by recording intensity variations of interference pattern of two waves with same polarization state,polarization holography could record amplitude,phase and polarization of wave simultaneously by polarization holographic gratings fabricated by two coherent waves with different polarization state.Polarization holography attracts much attention with its unique ability of recording additional polarization information.The traditional theory of polarization holography is based on Jones theory under paraxial approximation which assume two waves propagating parallel.The understanding of polarization holography is limited for that theory is valid only at small cross-angle.The newly developed vector polarization holograph theory based on tensor theory breaks up the limitation of paraxial approximation.And it is convenient to study the characteristics of polarization holography at arbitrarily cross-angle with the vector polarization holography theory.The recording and diffraction properties of volume polarization holography written at arbitrarily cross-angle are systematically investigated based on new polarization holography theory described by tensor.The condition of faithful reconstruction,and unique phenomenon of "null reconstruction effect","inverse reconstruction effect" in polarization holography are studied in detail and demonstrated experimentally.And the application research is also carried out.First,the characteristics of volume polarization holography written by linear polarization waves are investigated.(1)The condition of faithful reconstruction of polarization holography written by arbitrary linear polarization state is studied.And the corresponding physical mechanism is discussed in detail.(2)The diffraction characteristics of polarization holography recorded by orthogonal linear polarization waves are investigated.And the experimental results indicate that both the diffraction efficiency and polarization state of diffracted wave vary with the shift of polarization state of reading wave.(3)The null reconstruction effect of polarization holography written by orthogonal linear polarization waves is studied for the first time.And the experimental result with cubic polarization-sensitive recording material fabricated in our lab agrees on well with theoretical prediction.(4)A dual-channel holographic recording system based on null reconstruction effect of orthogonal linear polarization holography is proposed.And experimental result indicates this dual-channel polarization multiplex holographic recoding method is valid.Second,the characteristics of volume polarization holography written by circular polarization waves are investigated.The research of faithful reconstruction of polarization holography written by circular polarization waves is carried out.The null reconstruction effect of polarization holography written by orthogonal circular polarization waves is studied by experiment.And the physical mechanism of the null reconstruction effect of orthogonal circular polarization holography is discussed in detail.The experimental result shows that the phase difference of two diffraction waves reconstructed by two orthogonal linear components of circular reading wave is ?.And the null reconstruction effect comes from coherent destruction of this two diffraction waves.The last,the characteristics of volume polarization holography written by circular polarization waves are investigated.The diffraction properties and faithful reconstruction condition of polarization holography written by elliptically polarization wave are studied in detail.And the extraordinary inverse reconstruction effect of polarization holography recorded by elliptically polarization wave is observed in experiment for the first time.The recording and diffraction characteristics of polarization holography written by linear polarization wave,circular polarization wave and elliptically polarization wave at arbitrarily cross-angle based on new vector polarization holography theory are systematically investigated.All experimental results indicate this new vector polarization holography theory is valid.And all works contribute the understanding of polarization holography.
