China has gained great economic benefits and meanwhile highlighted the gravest environmental pollution problems for nearly 40 years of reform and opening up.With the domestic and overseas concerns about the carbon emission and other ecological environment problems,and the constant perfection of institutional environment,enterprises also began to gradually realize the importance of balanced development of environment and economy,balance the interests of all parties,and improve and enhance the enterprise environmental performance step by step.Under the background of the possible goal conflict in the enterprise environmental performance and economic performance,the driving mechanism of the enterprise environmental performance has always been the key of focus in the theoretical circle.Some institution elements involving environmental regulations and media etc.as the driving factors have been discussed by the academic circle,but the conclusions have not been unified,and also the institutional theory analysis has not been systematic enough.In addition,the strategic management circle has lacked the in-depth investigation into the problems on "how the enterprise was confronted with the environment issues and by which strategic behavior the enterprise reacted".Based on the new institutionalism research paradigm of organizational sociology,this research deems the demands of organizational legitimacy as the entry point,attempts to excavate the internal influencing mechanism of institution pressure on the enterprise environmental strategic reaction and enterprise environmental performance and the intervening mechanism of enterprise environmental strategic reaction,and explores the regulation effect of the manager cognition on the above mechanism in view of the importance and strategic decision-making effect of the manager on the external environmental perception in the organization.Specifically,this paper will carry out the in-depth investigation into the following problems:(1)whether the enterprise implementing the environmental strategy has the motivation of organizational legitimacy extensively,which institution pressure has the significant influence on the enterprise environmental performance;(2)which strategic reaction is formed in the enterprise under the institution pressure,what the internal reaction process is,how the mechanism of the institution pressure influencing the environmental strategic reaction is;(3)which degree of influence of the enterprise environmental strategic reaction on enterprise environmental performance,what kind of role the enterprise environmental strategic reaction plays between institution pressure and environmental performance;(4)whether the influencing mechanism of institution pressure on enterprise environmental performance makes a difference in different enterprises,whether the manager cognition influences the above mechanism.This research firstly makes the exploratory case study on five different enterprises from four sectors,applies the analytical thinking of mutual remedy and mutual argumentation among case data,theoretical explanation,and model building,explores the logical relationship between the institution pressure perceived by the enterprise,the enterprise environmental strategic reaction and the enterprise environmental performance,puts forward the theory proposition that the institutional environment has the positive influence on enterprise environmental strategic reaction and enterprise environmental performance,while the enterprise environmental strategic reaction positively acts on the enterprise environmental performance,and accordingly demonstrates the reasonability of conception in this paper preliminarily.Secondly,this research puts the generation mechanism of enterprise environmental problems and enterprise environmental performance in the institutional environment,finds out deeper theoretical cornerstone for the research proposition of the exploratory case by the literature expansion and layering analysis based on the research results relevant to new institutional theory,strategic management theory and stakeholder theory,reveals two internal mechanisms of "institution pressure-enterprise environmental strategic reaction-enterprise environmental performance" and "manager cognition-relationship between institution pressure and enterprise environmental performance" under the perspective of organizational legitimacy from the theory and case to a certain extent,and builds the theoretical model of this study.Thirdly,this research reports the design process and main contents of the required questionnaire for verifying the theoretical assumption,the scale design basis and the sources of measure indexes in details,involving the basis for sample selection,questionnaire recovery method,and questionnaire recovery process,and major research methods.The normative empirical test is made for the data acquired from 204 valid questionnaires and 27 assumptions in the statistical methods involving descriptive statistics,exploratory factor analysis,confirmatory factor analysis of structural equation modeling,and regression analysis.Finally,this research further discusses and analyzes the main conclusions and viewpoints of the paper,summarizes the theoretical significance of this research and the enlightenment from enterprise management on the strategic decision-making of environmental problems,and proposes the direction of further research on the basis of reporting the shortage of this research.Through the above research work,the following conclusions are reached:(1)the institution pressure perceived by the enterprise has the significant and positive driving effects on the enterprise environmental strategic reaction and enterprise environmental performance;(2)the institution pressure perceived by the enterprise can be divided into three kinds of forced,normative and imitative,and has different significance and degrees of influence on the enterprise environmental strategic reaction and the enterprise environmental performance;(3)the enterprise green product strategy and green flow strategy have different roles and effects on the enterprise environmental financial performance and the enterprise environmental quality performance;(4)the enterprise environmental strategic reaction is the important internal capacity of influencing the enterprise environmental performance,and plays a mediating role in different types of institution pressure and enterprise environmental performance in varying degrees;(5)the manager cognition has a normal regulating effect between the institution pressure and the enterprise environmental performance.As a whole,this research realizes the following research progresses:(1)it breaks through the previous research paradigm from the perspective of economic benefits and stakeholders,makes up the research from the perspective of environmental regulations,combines the strategic perspective and institutional perspective,i.e.researching how the enterprise gains the legitimacy in the environmental problems and also discussing the legitimacy method and strategy under the environment of legitimacy,further perfects the research based on the institutional strategy view;(2)it discusses whether the institutional environment of the developing country can drive the environmental strategic choice and influence the environmental performance relative to the mature market and institutional environment in the western country.In view of this problem,it systematically builds and empirically tests two analysis models,verifies the "environment-strategy-performance"classic paradigm under the Chinese situation by the empirical research,and expands the mature institutional theory to the new situation.
