Objective:This dissertation took as its research subject the first monograph on TCM gynecology and obstetrics in literature existing,Furen Da Quan Liang Fang(Comprehensive and Effective Prescriptions on Women's Diseases)by Chen Ziming.Based on the systemic sorting of Chen Ziming's academic thoughts on gynecology and obstetrics embodied in the book, this thesis analyzed and summarized them as the "Seven Views" on women, including physiological, pathological, diagnostic, disease views, therapeutic, medicinal and preventive.Through tracing literature,it clarified the source of TCM theories on gynecology and obstetrics, revealed the construction, development and evolution of corresponding academic thoughts, and researched and elucidated the disputed problems.By comparing theoretical changes before and after Chen's times,it restored a relatively clear process of cognition, analyzed and explored the motivations that influenced the formation, development and changes of Chen's thoughts from multiple perspectives. On the basis of exploring new perspectives in the literature research of traditional Chinese medicine,it also provided literature data for clinical practice of TCM gynecology and obstetrics, and inspired clinical dialectical thinking.Method: It mainly involved the research method of TCM medical history literature, combined with multidisciplinary theories and approaches from the aspects of culture, sociology, history, and statistics, etc.Result:The thesis analyzed and summarized literature as the "Seven Views" on women,Then made an objective evaluation on the academic status of Furen Da Quan Liang Fang in the history of TCM gynecology and obstetrics, explored and revealed the influence of historical background, involving social, cultural, political, economic, climatic, and conventional factors,on women's constitution, disease spectrum and even the physician's thinking paradigm, excavating its role in the formation and development of gynecological and obstetric theories. Conclusion:This research found the book of Furen Da Quan Liang Fang had cited over 70 kinds of documents prior to Southern Song Dynasty, which was of relatively high reference value for literature research.Through Chen Ziming's systematic summary,we are able to get a glimpse of the development and overview of TCM gynecology and obstetrics before its times. While following, respecting and inheriting from ancient TCM classics,he emphasized that doctors should make their own elucidation and innovation after understanding and absorbing the essence of the theories proposed by previous sages. Many theories and methods were initiated by Chen Ziming. For instance,Chen created a new writing paradigm for monographs on TCM gynecology and obstetrics;based on the thinking guidance of "women's stuff centering around blood",employed Four Ingredients Decoction as a universal recipe;and followed the general diagnostic principle of "discerning yin and yang, differentiating deficiency and excess, observing essence and blood, and emphasizing blood and qi".He was the first doctor not only to stress the importance of "leukorrhea" in diagnosis of gynecological diseases, but also to record the method of treating malposition with moxibustion on acupoint of Zhiyin. Therefore, the book was highly valued and respected by doctors of later generations. The content, writing style, cataloging order, academic thoughts and common prescriptions of many works on TCM gynecology and obstetrics afterwards were based on this book.As a work of inheriting the past and illuminating the future,it thus possesses a significant impact on the development of gynecology and obstetrics in Chinese medicine. On the other hand, the development of TCM theories on gynecology and obstetrics was not only due to the inherent strength, the developmental motives of which included the accumulation of traditional culture, the nourishment of humanistic environment, the government's emphasis on medicine, medical system, medical education and inheritance, scientific development and advances in technology, and economic growth,as well as changes and fluctuations in natural factors such as geography and climate.Meanwhile,as individuals in a complex social environment, social and cultural factors would determine not only the changes in the constitution, physique, and causes of diseases of human audiences, especially of women, but also the doctor's thinking paradigm. Both the doctor's and the patient's morality, values, aesthetics, and health concepts should thus be branded with the historical marks of social influence.
