"Integration of Calligraphy into Painting" has long been a great tradition in the history of Chinese painting,and a major driving force and core spirit as well."Integration of Calligraphy into Painting" derives from the concepts of "Common Origin of Calligraphy and Painting" and"Consubstantiality of Calligraphy and Painting",demonstrating the mutual relation between Chinese calligraphy and painting,namely the“Spirit of Brush Techniques"."Integration of Calligraphy into Painting"has seen various expressions in Chinese art history,while "Integration of Epigraphy into Painting" was a special stage and major development during the Qing dynasty and the Republic of China.Therefore,it is of great academic importance to further explore the tradition of "Integrationof Calligraphy into Painting",especially the phenomenon of the expression of "Integration of Epigraphy into Painting" in the painting of the Qing dynasty and the Republic of China.As it is of great academic significance to reveale the relation between "Epigraphy",Huang Binhong's opinion of "Painting Revival during the Daoguang,Xiantong Periods",and the evolution of Chinese painting during the Qing dynasty and that in contemporary China.Besides,it also plays a major part in the continuity of traditional Chinese painting as well as in the improvement of teaching and learning of Chinese painting.Taking the four typical "Epigraphic" painters of the Qing dynasty and contemporary China as examples,namely Jin Nong,Zhao Zhiqian,Wu Changshuo,and Huang Binhong,this thesis aims to analyze the academic supporting and formal expressions of each artist,so as to demonstrate the significance of "Epigraphy" through careful analysis of the painting practices of Jin Nong's "Integration of Paint Calligraphy(Ancient Lishu or Bafen)into Painting",Zhao Zhiqian's "Integration of Weibei Calligraphy into Painting",Wu Changshuo's "Integration of Stone Drum Calligraphy into Painting",as well as Huang Binhong's"Integration of Jinwen Calligraphy into Painting".
