A Study On The Narrative Space In The New Century Fiction

Under the background of the “Space Transfer” thought in the field of humanities and social sciences in the second half of the 20 th century,the study on literature narrative space has been paid more and more attention.In the face of the complicated space discourse and research perspective,the author combines the narrative features and the new carrier of the new century fiction,and interprets the literature narrative space from the essential significance of space existence which is the two cognitive aspects of novel narration's physical space and fictional space.The specific content is mainly concentrated in four aspects: the first is the media space of the novel narration in the new century.Literary narration is carried out by language,so it is bound to be influenced by the physical media of the language itself.Therefore,attention should be paid to the study of the fiction language physical media space(spoken language-printing-screen).The second is the metaphorical space of the new century fiction's narrative.Metaphorical space is put forward from the angle of reader's acceptance.It is a kind of mental perception of readers' reading acceptance,and a kind of “structural metaphor” in the narrative structure of fiction.The third is the virtual space that is the virtual non-realistic existence presented in the fiction text narrative,but is closely related to the narrative subject.The fourth is the realistic perceivable entity space presented in the narrative text of the fiction.The attention of the academic circles to the question of narrative space originated in 1945 by the American scholar Frank who proposed the concept of “spatial form” of the fiction.The theory of “space form” was introduced to China by scholar Qin Linfang at the end of the twentieth century.Since then,it has been developing continuously in the upsurge of the updating theory.But in literary criticism,the concepts of “space form”,“narrative space” and “space narrative” have always been vague.The author analyzes the gains and losses in the study of the new century fiction,and expounds the distinction between the concepts.First of all,the thesis takes the awakening of media consciousness as a breakthrough point in literary narrative study,and investigates the change of narrative in the fiction caused by the change of media space in narration.The popularization of the network in the new century,the screen space and the hypertext fiction,whether it is a net text-based hypertext fiction or a multimedia hypertext fiction,all seems to have opened an alternative way for the literature narrative.Secondly,the thesis analyses the way in which the “metaphorical space” of the narration of the new century fiction presents.By juxtaposition,fragmentation,montage and multiple plots,the new century fiction eliminate and conceal time or simply omission of time instructions.The “metaphorical space” has two prominent features,namely,time spatialization and juxtaposition.Taking “Dictionary Style” fiction as an example,the “Dictionary Style” fiction of the new century intertexts with the practical style,dispels text fiction,employs the “zero distance” narration,breaks through the routine of linear time narration,and presents the narrative space.Thirdly,the thesis discusses the“Utopian” narrative and the virtual space.The main content is the practice of intellectual Utopia space ideal and the narration of the Local Utopia and Anti-Utopia.Lastly,the thesis probes the real space and the “heterotopia” narrative.The “heterotopia” space in fictions of the new century is mainly manifested in the bottom narration.City “heterotopia” mainly refers to the living space of the urban underclass such as the mining area,construction site,and garbage dumps etc.
