Khaled Hosseini is the first Afghan-American author who writes in English. He presents Afghanistan,a remote and mysterious country for many,to the wider world in a delicate literary style. All of his personal experience of traveling around a myriad of countries and the living conditions, thoughts, and sentiments of the characters in his works embody the typical characteristics of “diaspora literature”.This paper makes textual analyses and cultural interpretations of Hosseini's novels through the research methods of “text close reading” and “thematic content analysis”.Diaspora issues in Afghan literature are studied from a holistic perspective, with a focus on a number of areas: the origin and evolution of diasporic culture, the identity construction of a diasporic nation, diasporas and oppression(from the perspective of power theory),diasporic writing during wartime periods, and many more.Alongside more mainstream interpretations of Hosseini's novel writing, this paper stresses the influence of social culture, social politics and ethnic consciousness on literature, and profoundly rethinks Afghanistan's social reality and the diaspora phenomenon in the era of globalization.Based on an extensive collection and study of background knowledge relating to Afghanistan, this paper explores the way Hosseini constructs a sense of national identity through the protagonist's self-redemption,struggles against destiny, and search for kinsmen. At the same time,it explores how Hosseini uses themes of kinship, friendship, and love during wartime from a personal perspective;how he exposes the cruelty of the war in his country;and how he appeals to the world to care for the Afghan people, who are suffering as a result of their diaspora and ethnic difficulties in their new countries. In addition, this study also aims to help to enhance people's understanding of Afghanistan's cultural and literary heritage, and to further highlight the social struggles and economic problems in Afghanistan over the past half-century.To many Westerners, the Afghan people and their religious practices remain an opaque and disturbing mystery.Hosseini does not directly challenge the West's traditional mainstream view towards Afghanistan;instead,he tries to correct and enrich people's views on Afghanistan through vivid, moving, and poetic plot conceptions and narrative techniques, unfolds the long history and multiculturalism of his motherland to the world, and enhances the world's understanding and empathy for his people. For these reasons, his novels have reached beyond the sphere of Eurasian culture and gained recognition from different cultural domains. The Afghan diaspora writers' literary works are based on their complex experience, multicultural shock, and national trauma;these fully demonstrate their profound understanding of and sympathy for the politics, culture, economy, and history of Afghanistan. They havebecome pioneers in revealing their homeland's suffering and in petitioning the world for national freedom and dignity.Hosseini's novels,on the one hand, strive to fully reveal the living conditions of the Afghan people, and,on the other hand, make full use of suspense, sadness, drama, plot reversal, and other necessary literary techniques to strengthen and elaborate on his standpoint. His literature is not only the expression of rhetorical skills and ideas but also a real force to change the world and its people.Within the scope of narrative techniques, his novels may not attempt to incorporate complicated and ever-changing modernist techniques, but they do adhere to the fine tradition of realism with a simple and unadorned style, often delivered with soul-shocking force, and they have become a model for the educational exploration of popular fiction.Hosseini's novels not only promote the development of contemporary American multicultural literature, and strengthen the social function of literature. His novels have already had tremendous influence, with intense and innovative themes;a series of shocking events, such as violence, agony, abuse, betrayal, abandonment, and the like, are vividly depicted in a sincere, direct, and delicate interpretative style. He bravely explores profound narratives like those of forgiveness and redemption, which have not only the charm of typical popular fiction, but also a profound ideological value and cultural significance. In brief, within a context of globalization, and taking “Living the Diaspora and Yearning for home: A Study of Khaled Hosseini's Novels” as its title, this paper integrates social and historical research with literary criticism, focusing on Hosseini's creative experience and artistic techniques in a broad historical and cultural background. In particular, this involves focusing on his presentation of diaspora, his sense of identity and his nostalgia for home. The paper broadens the horizon of literary research on immigrants and ethnic minorities, and also conducts literary thinking of connected issues such as ethnocentrism, gender equality, power discourse, transnational migration, cultural conflicts, and many others.Hosseini's unique migrant and diasporic experiences have gradually moulded his characteristic multicultural identity. The influence and impact which American culture has had on him, alongside his attachment to his indigenous culture, have endowed him with an inclusive writing style and a clear perspective as an outsider with a unique insight into both. This allows him to rank as an outstanding representative of both contemporary diaspora literature and American literature, and helps him to promote the acceptance of wider diversity of American literature.
