The development of the integration of urban and rural areas is the key solution to agriculture, rural areas and farmer problems. It is also the fundamental objectives for the continuation of healthy and rapid development of national economy and the realization of two of the centurial goal. With the process of our country's rapid marketization, internationalization.industrialization, urbanization, and informatization up through the turn of the century,it has become even more difficult to increase the efficiency of the agricultural industry, improve famer's income, lessen the disparity gap for workers and peasants(peasant workers),and reverse the expansion of regional inequality. On a deeper level, the reason for such phenomenon can be attributed to a lack of a breakthrough in designing a comprehensive binary structure for integrating urban and rural areas and the serious absence of urbanization as well as insufficient modifications to a flawed system. The western China, especially the western minority areas which accounted for 1/4 of total population, seventy percent of total land area, because of the relatively poor natural conditions, economic and cultural backwardness, lack of weak development foundation, the innovation of system and mechanism, witnesses that the development of the integration of urban and rural areas is a very difficult task.Whether the western region can achieve the integration of urban and rural or not has a direct effect on the development and stability of the local region, and determines the full realization of a well-off society. This dissertation, guided by the Marxist theory of urban and rural integration, will systematically sort through concepts pertaining to the development of urban and rural integration written by classic Marxist and Chinese Marxist writers and implement such ideas when analyzing relevant situations in the ethic areas of western China.More specifically, the aforementioned research and analysis will focus on the recent success of the integration practice in the "Yulin model" in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Through the comparative analysis of the "Yulin model" and the "Chengdu model",I will summarize and explain the successful elements of the"Yulin model" in addition to its basic laws, further providing the feasible countermeasures and suggestions for promoting the integration of urban and rural development in western ChinaThe dissertation can be broken down into six chapters.Besides the introduction, the main body of the dissertation consists of five chapters which proceed as follows:Chapter 1 describes the Marxist theory of urban and rural integration including classical Marxist theory and the Sinicized-Marxist theory on urban and rural integration.Chapter 2 describes the urgency and particularity of urban and rural integration in western China.Chapter 3 tracks the long run trajectory of urban and rural integration from 1840 onwards, when the so called "Yulin model" for urban and rural integration was established and implemented.Chapter 4 explores the“Yulin model's" role as a successful example in western China based on theoretical principle and empirical observation.Furthermore,it will expound upon the practical results, specific characteristics, and inherent implications of the success of the rural development driven by a "small city model" by contrasting it with the rural development driven by a "large city model".Lastly,Chapter 5 summarizes and concludes the analysis of the five significant aspects of urban and rural integration in western China.
