The Modern Choice Of Cultural Memory And Tourism Reconstruction

Under the theoretical background of culture globalization and the realistic background of ethnic cultural development in villages,the paper chooses Jiangsu Lingtang Hui Township,a marginal Hui cultural enclave located in the economically developed eastern region of China as the survey point,elaborates the development trajectory of the marginal Hui culture under the influence of the cultural changes and the tourism development,and analyzed the people's modern choices,the acting force of tourism development,and the resisting force of cultural development.Lingtang Hui Township,as the only Hui village in Jiangsu Province,lies to the north of Yangzhou City.According to the administrative divisions,Lingtang belongs to Gaoyou city,Yangzhou.With cable industry as its brand,Lingtang has become a typical well-developed agriculture-to-industry-transformed economy.Lingtang's being chosen as the survey point is based on the following considerations.First of all,on one hand,Lingtang Hui Township presents a typical marginal Hui culture under the influence of cultural globalization,with motivation of economic development for continuous acculturation,on the other hand,with little research about this area being done,the construction of Lingtang Hui Township and its culture poses research value of small area with representativeness.Second,the researcher,a Hui coming from the Islamic cultural core area in western China,as a subject of the gaze,being in the marginal Hui cultural environment both familiar and unfamiliar,can better avoid the researcher's own social ideological preconception,keep mind balance,and also have a cross-cultural perspective.The main contents of the paper:The first chapter,serving as the introduction part,introduces research background and significance of the thesis,reviews and comments on the literature,presents the basic concepts and related theories,clarifies the research questions and the basic ideas,and points out the innovations and deficiencies of the research.The second chapter recounts the general situation of Lingtang Hui Township in terms of the living space,the origin of the Hui ethnic group memory,the ethnic relations between Hui and Han and the mode of marginal Hui culture.By adopting the writing method of historical anthropology,the author is intended to explain the real society on the basis of historical texts such as oral histories and historical documents.Tracing back the history of cultural development helps to deepen the understanding of reality.The study of historical anthropology upon the survey point offers a referential,measurable,and displayable relation venue for modernity construction.In the third chapter,the author applies thick description to the Lingtang Hui culture which is under the influence of geopolitical changes,and analyzes the causes of cultural changes.The development of urbanization triggered geopolitical structure changes in the traditional Hui community.Ethnic intermarriages and the transformation of the residential patterns and the economic structure brought the changes of modernity to Hui culture.In the fourth chapter,the author narrates the local construction of Lingtang Hui Township.The impact of the global relocalization and the driving forces of cultural economy initiated Lingtang Hui Township's launching of a government-centered local construction,which includes cultural memory reconstruction and the production of an ethnic tourism region.The local construction is the renovation of traditions after the local destruction,is the process of constructing the visual symbols,and also is the process of arousing residents' local memories and emotions.In the fifth chapter,the cultural subjects' sense of place and the cultural identity under the local construction are analyzed.In this chapter,the author analyzes people's values and behavior patterns by applying the classical grounded theory and methods.On the basis of the tourism market demand and others'(Han people)reflection,the author constructs the grounded theory of cultural subjects' value demand,and explicates the influencing factors of residents' support of tourism during the initial stage of tourism development.Cultural awareness is the main focus and the difficulty of the research.In the sixth chapter,the functional-mechanisms of the local reconstruction upon cultural development,including the guiding mechanism of nostalgia,creation mechanism of symbolic capital,incentive mechanism of community participation were summarized.The author demonstrates the diverse interest-demands of the modern choices of the culture,and analyzes the hindrance factors to the development of Lingtang Hui culture.The seventh chapter sums up the research process of this subject,gives answers to the research questions,explains the development trajectory of culture and the people's modern choices,and provides a discussion upon some existing problems,a prospect for the future study and some additional remarks on the defects of the research.The basic viewpoints of the thesis can be briefed as follows.Cultural developments are the results of the driving forces of politics and economy.The transformation and innovation of culture is the result of people's rational choices.The development of the residents is the result of the interaction between subjectivity and power system.A well-balanced relationship between cultural values and interests is beneficial to promote the cultural economy of traditional ethnic communities,to the development of culture,and to the development the residents.
