The Chinese Educational Review is an educational journal established in 1909 by the Commercial Press,the largest private cultural publisher in modern China.Published for nearly 40 years,it always kept pace with China’s new educational system.With its long history and great influence,the Chinese Educational Review nowadays is of great importance for researching into modern China’s educational reform and discourse changes.During its glory days lasting from the 1930s to the outbreak of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War,it could circulate as many as 45000 copies each issue,which made it the most widespread and popular educational journal in the Republic of China.The Macro Polo Bridge Incident on July 7th,1937 marked the beginning of the outbreak of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War,and as a result China’s educational journals fell into their valley period from their peak period.The Chung Hwa Educational Review founded by Chung Hwa Book Corporation is a case in point.It enjoyed the same popularity as the Chinese Educational Review before the outbreak of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War,but declared suspension of publication in the second month of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War.In contrast,the Chinese Educational Review persisted in publishing regardless of the war and bravely worked as the education medium,showing its strong sense of problems.During the Anti-Japanese War,the Chinese Educational Review aimed at building wartime education forum to collect advice for the authority to refer to,and at the same time made efforts to strengthen its information function and present wartime education ecology in order to help educators reach the consensus of "Education saves the nation" and boost their confidence of winning the war.Under the historical background of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War and the inward migration of wartime cultural and educational center,this thesis constructs its research framework on the basis of Communications’ "5W" communication mode and then carries out a systemic research and deep investigation into the publication,circulation as well as cultural transmission value of the Chinese Educational Review during wartime.To be specific,this thesis is composed of the following 6 chapters:Chapter 1 comprehensively examines the countermeasures implemented in editing and publishing by the Chinese Educational Review after the outbreak of the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War.It mainly examines the Chinese Educational Review’s short suspense and quick resumption during its several migrations as well as its purpose,editing principle and column adjustment at wartime.Then this chapter moves on to study HUANG Jue-min,the chief editor of the magazine,and his publishing style,and contributor group’s evolutionary features as well as the planning&publishing of special topics and issues at wartime.Chapter 2 concentrates on the Chinese Educational Review’s education forum construction principle,topic setting,and forum construction tips.In content,the education forum was oriented to supporting the war;in public stance,it tried to be as inclusive as possible,expressing its professional and rational value pursuit.The Chinese Educational Review’s wartime education forum could be divided into two parts according to this magazine’s main columns’ function:the main forum led by"main body" and the auxiliary form organized by "the otherness".The extensive analysis into some specific wartime topics like "wartime education principle","correspondence courses" and "normal education" highlights the editors’ forum construction strategies and skills by which the main forum and the auxiliary forum fully interacted and coordinated with each other,and sometimes complemented each other as well.Chapter 3 focuses on the outline and portrait of the wartime education ecology of all levels and kinds.The Chinese Educational Review presented the wartime education ecology through various literary forms such as news reports,test reports,novels,etc.During the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War,Chinese educators took great pains and efforts to preserve China’s education,carry on national consciousness and promote inland culture,which was influential enough to move the world and inspire our allies.Furthermore,the Chinese Educational Review at wartime also gave special attention to the spirit and patriotism of university teachers and students who moved inward from the areas controlled by the nationalist party as well as regional schools’ teachers and students led by the communist party.Besides,the intellectuals’ "alienation" phenomenon in enemy-occupied areas was deeply disclosed and analyzed by the magazine as well.Chapter 4 surveys the various books,journals,and some related ads published in the Chinese Educational Review by the Commercial Press.This chapter analyzes the Chinese Educational Review’s changes in the types and strategies of ads before and after the war,revealing its essence of struggling between cultural defense and commercial pursuit as an education media.Chapter 5 centers on the circulation environment and methods of the Chinese Educational Review.During wartime,the Chinese Educational Review was faced with the following reality:It was located in Hong Kong,a famous cultural city for publishing at wartime;the cultural and educational center moved to the rear area;the number of education journals dropped dramatically.The Commercial Press’s wartime circulation network became the main circulation channel for the Chinese Educational Review.In addition,it made full use of the inside and outside books,journals and newspaper for its promotion,achieving wide popularity in the rear area,Hong Kong’ Singapore and Macao.The last chapter deals with the Chinese Educational Review’s contribution in advancing wartime education policy formulation and revision,promoting the Commercial Press’s great cause of "cultural defense" and providing precious first-hand materials for wartime education research.During the Full-Scale Anti-Japanese War,the Chinese Educational Review,with its professionalism as an authoritative education journal,was courageous enough to take the responsibility of cultural defense,played a leading role in studying wartime education problems in education field,and promoted the Commercial Press’s great cause of "cultural defense".The Chinese Educational Review was quite successful in adapting to the war environment in terms of its content and circulation,which is of great historical significance and cultural transmission value,providing great enlightenment for the full play of contemporary journals’ subjective initiative and the promotion of educational cause.
