Abstract/Summary:
The Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) is a valid measure of cultural sensitivity. A need exists to test ISS with other populations. The counseling literature identifies a need to compare counselor multicultural competence scales with other related scales. This study was designed to fill both gaps as it (a) introduced the ISS as a valid instrument for measuring the construct of intercultural sensitivity in counselors and (b) compared the ISS with the Multicultural Awareness, Knowledge, and Skills Survey-Counselor Edition-Revised (MAKSS-CE-R). Each of the five factors (self-esteem, self-monitoring, perspective taking, interaction attentiveness, and social confirmation) was significantly correlated with the ISS; prediction models were tested. Regression models determined (a) the combination of all five factors was the best predictor of ISS with social confirmation carrying the most weight, and (b) the combination of ISS and self-monitoring was the best predictor of MAKSS-CE-R. No significant correlations were found between length of time as sojourner and the two multicultural scales. The needs of international counselors and implications for building multicultural training programs are addressed.
