Abstract/Summary:
This study was an examination of the relationship between perfectionism, anxiety, and gymnasts' performance. Specifically, the study investigated how anxiety and perfectionism affect the performance in adolescent competitive gymnasts. It was predicted that perfectionism and anxiety would affect performance. Participants included 70 competitive gymnasts ranging in ages from 10 to 17, each of whom completed the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) and the Sport-Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale 2 (Sport-MPS-2). Performance was measured using the end-of-season state competition score for each gymnast. The results of Spearman's rank correlations evidenced no statistically significant correlations between perfectionism and performance or between anxiety and performance. However, statistically significant correlations were found between perfectionism and anxiety.
