Abstract/Summary:
A study of vision follow-up exams to low-income, African American students in grades K-8 was conducted. Interviews were conducted with 18 participants. Inclusive of the interviewees were school administrators (principal and assistant principal), teachers, parents, vision technicians, vision coordinator, nurse coordinator, and an optometrist. Information on vision follow-up rates and factors that contribute to vision follow-up, such as transportation, finances, lack of knowledge, or lack of concern. In addition, several studies on vision follow-up were reviewed to enhance the researcher's understanding of the history of vision follow-up in various communities.;Each participant provided ample data to allow the analysis of the school's vision follow-up program. Each interviewee provided a different response to the questions asked. Several factors were found to enhance vision follow-up rates in low-income African American communities. These same factors were found to hinder vision follow-up if they were not provided by the school. Each participant was able to give an account of the school's ability to communicate effective ways to enhance vision follow-up at their school, and this was an added value to the knowledge of how to have a successful vision follow-up program for other schools.
