Abstract/Summary:
This examination highlights the post-civil rights development of black Americans refining and stressing their racial identity at the expense of cultivating and forming their Christian religious identity. The tradition of subjugating Christian religious development and identity formation in favor of racial identity has established cultural consequences for black Christians and the American church. Historical methodology was the basis for this examination to explore the transition from religiosity and race-neutrality of the civil rights movement, to religious unorthodoxy and racial centrality of the black power movement, which provided an historical foundation and insight into this current racial and religious identity crisis.
