Abstract/Summary:
This paper reviews the literature regarding intimate partner violence, the mental health needs of Latino families living in the United States, and possible treatment methods for Latino families regarding intimate partner violence. Particular emphasis is on the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as it represents areas of the United States where Latinos/as have recently begun immigrating in larger numbers. Issues surrounding intimate partner violence are also discussed, as many factors predispose families to violence. Taking a multi-issue approach allows service providers to address violence prevention as well as treatment after violence has occurred. This paper makes recommendations regarding culturally sensitive adaptations to treatment with Latinos/as and discusses the Cultural Context Model, a social justice treatment model with particular relevance to Latino/a immigrants.
