The Upward Bound Program, a supplemental program to help bridge the academic achievement gap for underrepresented student groups, faces numerous challenges. The purpose of this study was to explore those challenges by identifying the priorities and life circumstances that impact students' benefiting from the additional instruction provided in the Program. To accomplish this, the study explored the variables of family dynamics, school environment, and social environment as they relate to academic achievement utilizing Payne's additive model as the conceptual framework. In this cross-sectional survey design study, a researcher designed instrument was administered to 93 student participants from two Upward Bound programs using a convenience sampling method. Correlation analysis was conducted using SPSS. Analysis of students' social environment and family background indicated that many respondents needed to be employed to contribute to their families' living conditions. As a result, their educations became secondary focuses, and their attempts to continue college preparation suffered. This study contributes to social change by providing data that allows Upward Bound Directors to alter their local programs to not only address academics but also, through partnering with local businesses, to create paid academically focused employment options for Upward Bound Program participants.
