Abstract/Summary:
The use of distance education by entry-level dental hygiene programs is increasing. The focus of this study was to determine the number of entry-level dental hygiene program administrators with experience developing and/or maintaining dental hygiene education by distance, the challenges encountered, and the strategies used to overcome the challenges. Data lead to the identification of Faculty Adaptation as the overarching challenge theme to developing and Human Relations as the overarching challenge theme to maintaining dental hygiene education by distance. Responses were elicited through e-mail listserve, and both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods were used. Of the 281 surveys sent, 172 (N = 172, 61.21%) responded, with 28 (N = 28, 16.28%) indicating use of distance education.
