Abstract/Summary:
Ministering to young career-oriented adults near Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, at the National Community Church (NCC) attracts a post-modern generation that wants to know God, make Him known, and express their love toward Him and others by obeying His commandments. Being raised in a postmodern culture, the young, career-oriented adults of NCC are faced with distinctive sexual and relational issues and decisions that also shape their culture. They know what their culture says about the limitless boundaries expressed through these identity issues; but what does God's Word say about this supposed freedom, and how can National Community Church address these vulnerable areas of life and still be relevant to the postmodern culture? The author's church, National Community Church, with its commitment to community group ministry, wants to provide a safe, accountable environment for these postmodern, career-oriented adults to discuss the issues of sexual identity within the framework of what God's Word has to say about these issues and freedom of expression based in Him.;A distinctive, discipleship community group option needs to be developed that is metro-accessible right here in the heart of our nation's capital for a postmodern generation wishing to obey God's commandment to love Him and each other freely within His bounds. Hence, the problem to be solved: How can a community group leader-led, local church-based discipleship group be initiated, implemented, and assessed to meet the brokenness needs for a postmodern generation of career-oriented adults of National Community Church of Washington, DC? Such a community group of discipleship and healing does have solid biblical support and some limited historic precedence and incipient, transferable contemporary examples.;The purpose of this ministry project is twofold: first, to provide a safe Christian environment for NCC congregants to receive discipleship and emotional healing from sexual and relational brokenness, and second, to equip those who have received discipleship-based healing to minister in the future to others within NCC who may struggle with comparable sexual and relational brokenness and perhaps identity confusion.
