Abstract/Summary:
The objective of this study was to examine a dual enrollment vocational program and determine how that program fosters student engagement with the educational process. A case study design was employed to study eight students currently participating in the dual enrollment vocational program. Semi-structured interviews of the students, their college and high school instructors, and guidance counselor were conducted to gather the participants' perceptions of the students' educational engagement prior to and after entering the vocational program. In addition, students' grade and attendance records were examined to determine whether any changes had occurred since enrolling in the program.;The framework for analyzing the data focused on the definitions of student engagement in the literature. All factors in the definitions were combined to facilitate the application of a single set of factors to the data gathering and analysis. When the findings from the study participants were compared with the factors to be considered when measuring student engagement, 12 of the 16 factors were present to a high degree. Therefore, it was concluded that participation in the dual enrollment vocational program enhanced the educational engagement of the participating high school students significantly.
