Abstract/Summary:
Teachers' ability to encourage parental involvement in their child's scholastic experience is important. The degree to which they are trained to do this required inquiry. This study set out to determine to what extent teachers believe they are trained to develop working relationship with parents and what more they could do to improve parental involvement in the academic lives of their children. Through survey questionnaire analysis and personal interviews, this study finds that teachers do not receive adequate training from their degree granting institutions in developing working relationships with parents, nor with respect to encouraging parental involvement. Further, it was learned that parental expectations regarding teachers' involving them in the affairs of their students' learning process are not being met. Implications are that training should be constructed for teachers to improve in this area.
