Abstract/Summary:
A resource handbook for graduate programs in clinical psychology was created to assist administrators and faculty in integrating lesbian, gay, and bisexual issues into existing curricula. The resource is a starting point for providing accurate information that will assist in training psychologists to be sensitive to bias based on sexual orientation, appropriate interventions and resources that will assist psychologists in working effectively with LGB individuals.; A systematic search of relevant literature was conducted to identify appropriate literature in the areas of education and training, LGB psychology, and multicultural psychology. The information selected for inclusion in the resource was based on consensual validation through triangulation across multiple sources (Patton, 2001). The information provided in this resource is consistent with the American Psychological Association (2000) guidelines for ethical and effective practice with LGB clients, the multicultural and LGB literature, and expert opinion.; The resource provides key content, therapeutic recommendations and resources in five content areas that were identified in the review of the literature and in consultation with experts in the area of LGB psychology as essential knowledge areas for training therapists to work with LGB clients. They include: Minority Stress; Identity Development and Stigma Management; Multiple Identities; Issues Across the Lifespan; and Relationships and Families. The resource also includes strategies from the literature for integrating LGB material into the classroom environment by course topic as well as relevant classroom activities and exercises, and an appendix including a glossary of terms and resources by topic.; Recommendations were provided for the use of the manual as well as approaches for creating open learning environments that facilitate multicultural learning and the acquisition of affirmative LGB attitudes, knowledge and skills. Future research may examine the impact of incorporating LGB issues into clinical psychology graduate curricula on psychologists' knowledge and attitudes. Additionally, a study of the components of therapist competence with transgender clients is needed to guide the field in the specific issues related to this population.
