Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the effective school characteristics identified in the effective schools research and the degree to which they are present in a rural, south-central Pennsylvania Intermediate School. The study measured the effective school correlates in a school that had failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress for two consecutive years. The perceptions of 34 members of the professional staff at the Intermediate School were surveyed using the More Effective Schools Staff Survey. In addition, data was gathered using a teacher questionnaire, follow-up interviews, walk-through observations, and retrieval of archival data. The results of the data from the instruments was synthesized and reported for each correlate.; Since the selected Intermediate School had failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress, it was expected that strength in some or all of the identified correlates of effective schools would not be demonstrated. Results indicated that strength was not demonstrated in six of the seven correlates. The correlate, safe and orderly environment was the only area that demonstrated a strength for the school.
