Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation consists of nine chapters that examine the effect of refugee flows on the politics of host countries. More specifically, I focus on host countries of first asylum which, in the cases considered here, are also neighboring countries. Such movements along borders can have multiple consequences from drawing in neighboring countries into civil conflicts to raising security concerns and imposing severe strains on the host economy. This dissertation focuses on two possible consequences of hosting refugees: (1) the proclivity among refugees to engage in protests and the likelihood of refugee-camps to become militarized; and (2) the likelihood of a country to intervene militarily in the civil conflict of a bordering country. Other related issues, such as Great-Power interventions are also examined using statistical analyses. Archival research, surveys, and interviews conducted in Bangladesh and Thailand are used to elucidate the motivations of refugee-hosting countries.
