Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research is to develop an integrated theory that can account for organizational changes with technology adoption and implementation. A four-step methodology of constructive theorizing (Mithaug, 2000) was employed as an effective strategy for theory development.;The first step was to examine principles and applications of the four existing theories that deal with technology in our society. In the second step, the researcher identified shortcomings of each theory and why inconsistencies among the theories occur. The inquiry in the first two steps led to propose an integrated theoretical framework. In the next step, a case study was designed and practiced to clarify credibility and validity of the proposed framework. To this end, a world-leading footwear company in the U.S. was recruited as a case company and its newly patented prototyping technology, named the Virtual Sampling (VS) system, was used to generate empirical data. Based on the case study findings, the proposed theoretical framework was revised and modified. Through the procedure, Technology Adoption and Implementation Model in Organization (TAIMO) was developed.;The main findings of this research can be summarized: (1) In the process of implementing a technology in an organization; there are external variable(s) that identify relative social groups within the organization. (2) The members in a social group tend to have different levels of perceptions and evaluations of technology adoption and implementation from those in another social group. (3) However, no matter which social groups they belong to, the social members are likely to follow the same psychological evaluation path in the organization, from the adoption stage to the implementation stage.
