In 1968, Kahn constructed a homotopy theory on the category of exact couples and used it as a tool to study stable homotopy theory. This dissertation introduces the category of chain couples, which includes exact couples, and show that it satisfies the axioms of a model category as developed by Quillen. When the homotopy theory of chain couples is applied to the subcategory of exact couples assuming certain hypotheses, the result coincides with Kahn's original theory. The category of chain couples also has connections to the classical homological algebra of R-modules, and provides a possible avenue for future research of homological algebra with finite CW-complexes. |
