Abstract/Summary:
One of the most important supporting tools to protect biological diversity is the identification of the controlling factors of its spatial patterns. The author has evaluated the controlling factors of the spatial patterns of landscape and species diversity. Also, habitat models of two endangered species of birds have been developed: Dupont Larks, Chersophilus duponti , and White-backed Woodpecker, Dendrocopos leucotos. Spatial databases of species distribution, maps of environmental variables (climate, lithology, land-covers) and historical factors were related using Generalised Additive Models as non-parametric regression tool and GIS. The spatial pattern of biological diversity, as the main conclusion, is the result of different processes belonging to different spatial and temporal scales. Also, as conclusions focused on biodiversity management, high levels of landscape diversity and low levels of habitat fragmentation must be encouraged in order to maintain high levels of species diversity.
