Abstract/Summary:
The traditional map metaphor has evolved beyond two dimensions and is now accompanied by a family of new 'map' types. Maps now encompass two dimensional displays, multi-dimensional digital representations, and static or interactive maps in both hard and softcopy formats. This research project examines the role of cartography within the context of developing 2-dimensional (2D) static maps, interactive 2D Internet maps, and 2.5D interactive Internet maps of West Virginia University (WVU). The contributing literature includes reviews of traditional cartographic processes, GIS and cartography, Internet mapping, and virtual reality and the Internet.;In the production of a traditional paper map of WVU, the influence of spatial dimension and graphical hierarchy on the map communication process was important. Development of a 2D interactive campus Internet Map system required dynamic spatial dimension and scale dependent graphics, adding to the complexity of the cartographic design process. In addition, it was evident that the information architecture of both 2D and 2.5D interactive Internet map systems ultimately determines the system performance and functionality. 2.5D maps also add depth perception and the ability dynamically to change a map user's perspective angle relative to the map's surface.;Through the investigation and implementation of current mapping technologies, this research has highlighted the continuing importance of cartographic theory in advanced digital map production. The combination of advances in digital mapping, GIS, the Internet, virtual reality and associated information technologies, has added to both the capabilities and the complexities of cartographic methodology.*.;*This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). The CD requires the following system requirements: Adobe Acrobat.
