Abstract/Summary:
In a collaborative effort, Fluent's computational fluid dynamics environment has recently been enhanced with a population balance capability that operates in conjunction with its multiphase calculations to predict the particle size distribution within the flow field. In this dissertation, verification work is performed for Fluent's Population Balance Modeling (PBM) package. The purpose of this work is to prove the accuracy of this package. Fluid mechanics comparison and PBM verification were performed. Fluid mechanics comparisons include velocity field and energy dissipation rate comparison and Residence Time Distribution comparison. PBM verification includes batch process verification, two-dimensional Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) verification and three-dimensional CSTR verification. All PBM predictions are compared with analytical solutions.; The results show that Fluent's predictions match with analytical solutions very well, when the fluid field calculation is accurate. The reason is Population Balance processes are affected strongly by the flow field.
