| Over the years, individuals and/or couples who engage in bondage, dominance, or sadomasochism have been historically viewed as having a mental illness. As a result, the general public as well as mental health professionals are prone to pathologize these practices. This dissertation reviews common stereotypes and provides a more comprehensive understanding in regards to BDSM lifestyles in attempts to shed light on a phenomenon that is commonly misunderstood. |
