Abstract/Summary:
The present study contends that Mexican immigrant communities possess the kind of flexibility and adaptability needed to thrive in the liquid modern society described by Zygmunt Bauman in his sociological dissertation, Liquid Modernity. After a brief introduction to the cultural significance of the corrido followed by a summary of some points from Zygmunt Bauman's Liquid Modernity that are relevant in the present study, I focus on three popular corridos extending from the last half of the twenty-first century to the present. My analysis contends that the content of these corridos aptly represents the liquid traits described in Bauman's Liquid Modernity as they are seen in what many hold to be the ultimate cultural expression of the social consciousness of Mexican immigrant groups. By examining the point at which the social consciousness expressed in Mexican corridos intersects with Zygmunt Bauman's description of liquid modern societies, it becomes apparent that Mexican immigrant groups possess many of these advantageous "liquid" traits.
