Abstract/Summary:
Baby boomers are men and women born between 1946 and 1964. They make up one fourth of the U.S. population (United States Census Bureau, 2006). The dissolution of long-term marriages is becoming more common. However, there is little research on the effects this transition has on women. This is an especially pertinent population to study as women may have a larger adjustment to make post-divorce as their identities may be more influenced by their roles and wife and mother. The current study explored women's experience of divorce from long-term marriages. Demographics information was gathered on the five participants and then an open interview format was utilized in order to gather information on the unique experiences of women in this age group who have experienced the dissolution of long-term marriages. Results showed that divorce from long-term marriages is a process for women, which starts with contemplation and included consideration of their spouses, children, family, and friends. This process has many facets and continues years after the legal divorce has occurred.
