Abstract/Summary:
The 1990s witnessed a revival of Henry James literature and film adaptations of his work. This dissertation investigates sections in novels and scenes in films of the American heroine's displacement, a common trope in Jamesian literature articulating discomfort with internationalism of the late nineteenth century. Theories of nationhood and cosmopolitanism as well as Gilles Deleuze's cinematic philosophy provide the tools to explain the American heroine's displacement in the global age. Her reemergence through the Henry James revival corresponds to the feelings of dislocation circulating at the onset of globalization.
