Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation discusses the ways in which medieval themes, history, and motifs were appropriated by historical novelists, publicists and artists during the nineteenth century in Germany to promote politicized models which imagined the future of the German nation. These imaginings often focused the imperial motif, and this study explores the ways in which various variables, such as gender, class, ethnicity, religious confession, and regional loyalties created a broader political band of interpretations of the medieval past than current scholarship tends to recognize.
