Abstract/Summary:
This study uses qualitative methods to investigate the experiences of social science researchers who have encountered ethical dilemmas in their research. The goal of this project was to uncover the events and circumstances at the research site, and the thoughts and feelings of the researcher, as they recognized and addressed the ethical dilemma. Four participants were selected for this project. Data was collected using an open ended interview for each participant. Each interview was then transcribed, coded, and analyzed using reconstructive analysis. The Preliminary analysis extracts themes for each participant. The Extended analysis presents the similarities and differences in themes across all participants. Each participant was asked, as part of a member check, to provide feedback on their preliminary analysis. The findings show there were many similar themes across participants, and that all participants placed a high value on the relationships they had with the people involved in their research projects. The findings also show that each participant had their own unique thoughts and feelings, philosophies, and processes to address their ethical dilemmas.
