The influence of sports participation on the identity development of African American males

This study looked into the experience of sports participation and the role that it plays in identity development of African American male athletes. An inductive and in-depth exploration of subjective experience of the participants provided crucial information and complex understanding of how the African American male athletes are influenced by sports. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants who were selected through convenience sample. This study showed that sports participation among African American male athletes had a significant impact in their identity development.
